This was one of my favorite deserts from my childhood that my mom would make. I was just thinking about it a while ago. It has been so many years since I've had this. I never got the recipe from my mother, but experimenting with a few different recipes I've settled on this final version and am pretty happy with it.
- 6 eggs
- 4 cups milk
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 1/4 tsp salt
- nutmeg
- cinnamon
-
Crack eggs together in a large bowl and whisk.
-
Add in salt, vanilla and sugar and whisk together.
-
Heat milk to just before it starts to boil, I use a microwave or you can do stovetop.
-
Slowly whisk scalded milk into egg mixture constantly stirring.
-
Pour into oven safe dish.
-
Sprinkle with nutmeg and cinnamon.
-
Put about an inch of hot water in the bottom of another oven safe dish to create a water bath. Place dish with custard in the water bath.
-
Heat oven to 350 and bake for 50-60 minutes
-
Test for doneness by inserting a toothpick until it removes clean.
-
Allow to cool and chill for approximately 2-4 hours before serving.
Serve by spooning a few scoops into a bowl and enjoy!
