Baked Egg Custard

Baked Egg Custard

This was one of my favorite deserts from my childhood that my mom would make. I was just thinking about it a while ago. It has been so many years since I've had this. I never got the recipe from my mother, but experimenting with a few different recipes I've settled on this final version and am pretty happy with it.

Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Author: Jeff Christy
Ingredients
  • 6 eggs
  • 4 cups milk
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • nutmeg
  • cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Crack eggs together in a large bowl and whisk.

  2. Add in salt, vanilla and sugar and whisk together.

  3. Heat milk to just before it starts to boil, I use a microwave or you can do stovetop.

  4. Slowly whisk scalded milk into egg mixture constantly stirring.

  5. Pour into oven safe dish.

  6. Sprinkle with nutmeg and cinnamon.
  7. Put about an inch of hot water in the bottom of another oven safe dish to create a water bath. Place dish with custard in the water bath.
  8. Heat oven to 350 and bake for 50-60 minutes

  9. Test for doneness by inserting a toothpick until it removes clean.

  10. Allow to cool and chill for approximately 2-4 hours before serving.
